Balıklıgöl is beyond doubt the most important tourist attraction in Şanlıurfa. Surrounded by mosques, madrasas, tea gardens, parks and gardens, Balıklıgöl attracts a good deal of attention for its natural beauty and story. While legend suggests the lake was formed during the period of Prophet Abraham, the discovery of the 13,500-year-old ‘Urfa Man’ statue in the area indicates the region was a place of settlement since prehistoric time. The lake 150 m x 20 m lake, named Kallirhoeduring ancient times, means “beautiful spring” in Greek.
