Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum

Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum, included in Şanlıurfa Museum Complex, was discovered during construction works of a parking lot by the municipality and reconstructed in-situ on the Ancient Roman Villa.  The mosaics found on the ground of the Villa date back to 3rd and 4th centuries BC. The most famous one in the museum is the mosaic floor (3 m x 9 m) depicting Amazon queens hunting. The mosaic depicts Amazon queens Hippolite, Thermodosa, Melanippe and Penthesileia hunting lion and leopard. It is the only sample known to depict Amazon warriors on a mosaic who are frequently mentioned in mythology but whose exact appearances are not known. The museum is also famous for the Mosaic Orpheus, illegally taken abroad and returned to Şanlıurfa, its home, in 2015. In the mosaic, dating back to 194 AD, Orpheus is depicted sitting and playing lyre for wild animals surrounding him. It is a very important mosaic because it has the name of the artist inscribed. Many of the mosaics uncovered around Şanlıurfa are also exhibited in this museum. The museum can be visited between 08.00 am and 17.00 pm in winter and 09.00 am and 19.00 pm in summer except Mondays. The museum charges an admission fee. However, Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum tickets include free entry to this museum.
